These sculptures, created from the 1st to the 8th century CE, were among the first to depict the Buddha in human form after centuries of using symbols.
Clothing: The robes often resemble the toga of Roman senators, draped over one shoulder. Hair: The hair is frequently styled in waves or curls, and the ushnisha (cranial protuberance) is often shown as a topknot, similar to images of the Greek god Apollo. Facial features: Faces are often youthful and have a serene, sometimes "sweet," expression, as seen in the Head of a Buddha, Gandharan style sculpture from the 2nd century.
